Our Reach for the Eyes Then & Now

Reach/Grab/Pull is a Chi for Two® practice that helps us understand our hunger to grab & control people and things. It helps us recognize our hunger to find the source of our life-sustaining support—a parent who celebrates our big feelings. Eye contact with a parent can soothe us when we are new to the world and everything is terrifying.

Fast forward to adulthood in the 21st century and our eyes are scanning for a face. Reach/Grab/Pull can help us recognize that we are looking through the same eyes that once reached for a parent as infants.

The increasing amount of time we spend alone, especially for those of us that work remotely or spend a significant period of time looking at a computer screen with data can make our eyes reach and grab toward social media.

What do some of the apps with the most "foot" traffic like Tiktok, Snapchat, and Instagram have in common? They have billions of videos, photos, and emojis of faces that can be endlessly yet unsatisfactorily reached for. Even dating apps like Match that used to be more text saturated have transitioned to being more photo packed. The escalating demand for Youtube Short and TikTok videos perpetuate that Fight/Flight activated Reach/Grab/Pull that is based on the same desire to grab & control for life sustaining support like when we were infants.

Chi for Two Embodiment Coaches invite relationally and developmentally based movement practices that promote core-to-distal strength which helps bring us back to our more capable, adult bodies. Our awareness of our adult bodies allows us to reach for people, places, and things that grow our ability to focus.

Our average attention span is 8.25 seconds. Reaching with our hands to interact with the world through our screen has less & less pull as we become more & more embodied in the here & now. Chi for Two Embodiment Coaches help shift our addictive reaches, helping us become more mindful so each moment can be more satisfying.
